![]() Crisis Services: what are they?A crisis describes any situation in which you experience a sudden, dramatic loss of your ability to solve your own problems. Crisis services offer immediate, short term help when you have had something happen that causes you extreme emotional, mental, physical or behavioral distress. Some examples of crisis situations are sexual assault, medical or mental illness, thoughts of suicide of homicide, extreme distress over alcohol or substance abuse. Crisis services take place in a range of settings: hospital emergency rooms, crisis centers, counseling centers, mental health clinics, schools, prisons and other social service agencies. The purpose of the crisis intervention is to reduce your emotional, mental and physical reactions to your problem situation. The intention is to return you to your functioning level before the crisis occurred. Through talking about what happened to you and your feelings about it, you learn to develop ways to cope and solve problems to prevent more serious long-term problems from happening to you. The length of time for crisis intervention may range from one session to several weeks.
